Ten years after her shark attack Bethany Hamilton gets married.
She was just 13 year old when tragedy struck but now, a decade later, Bethany is enjoying true happiness in her newest role as…a married woman!
After losing her left arm in a shark attack in her native Hawaii, Bethany showed remarkable resilience and courage as a survivor and later going on to become a professional surfer. She was, in fact, the inspiration behind the movie Soul Surfer which is based on this incident that was close to having a fatal outcome.
So, who did she marry and how did they meet? Well, some friends set her up on a blind date with Adam Dirks, 25, a Christian youth minister who also happens to be rather good-looking and adventurous. Adventurous, because on their first date, they jumped off a cliff, together!
After that, Bethany and Adam would go hiking, play tennis, and hang out with friends, as they got to know each other! Then romance blossomed.
The relationship grew, and after dating for one year, Adam proposed last May. Bethany wrote on her Facebook page, “One year ago today, I met an amazing man, now we will spend the rest of our lives together and I'm soo excited! I love you Adam!"
After announcing her engagement she told InTouch magazine she didn’t think it would be easy to meet someone and fall in love because she was “different.” But she did and she has now started a new and exciting chapter in her life.
A beautiful couple, so in love!
The wedding took place on August 18 at a secluded 130-acre estate on the island of Kauai, close to the town where Bethany was raised. According to People magazine, that was granted the wedding exclusive, the festivities were attended by 300 friends and family members. Her gown was by Lazaro and for the reception she changed into a custom creation from local boutique, A. Ell Design.
Bethany gushes that her new husband is genuine, kind, fun, adventurous, easy going, friendly to all, passionate for Christ and just a great guy over all! "I love surfing, but getting married doesn't even compare. This was definitely the best night of my life."
So, are you wondering where the groom whisked his bride away for their honeymoon when they just happen to live in the very place that so many newly-married couples consider to be paradise on earth? You guessed it! Alaska!
